Circular economy model for microalgal based nutraceutical production from steel industry wastewater through Biorefinery Model – A Waste to Wealth Strategy

The present study focuses on growth of Coelastrella thermophila in wastewater from Jindal Steel and Power Plant, Angul, Odisha (JSPP) and along with its nutrient profiling, which includes lipids, proteins, pigments, carbohydrates, ash content and mineral content to produce biodiesel.

A sustainable model was designed for effective utilization of industrial wastewater from Jindal Steel and Power Industry, Angul, Odisha (JSPP) as the nutrient medium for the production of high-value products from Coelastrella thermophila. A novel integrated process is developed based on detergent (sodium dodecyl sulfate) hydrolysis to convert the carbohydrates present in microalgal biomass to reducing sugars for microbial fermentation, while making available lipids for downstream processing of γ-linolenic acid, astaxanthin leaving the protein rich fragment behi
